The History of Japan’s Air-Conditioned Workwear

Japan is known for creating practical solutions to everyday problems, and one interesting example is the development of “air-conditioned clothing,” commonly called Kuchofuku in Japanese.

The person most closely associated with its invention is Hiroshi Ichigaya. After leaving Sony, he established Seft Research Institute in 1991. During a business trip to Southeast Asia in the late 1990s, he began thinking about a simple question: Instead of cooling an entire room, why not cool only the person?

This idea led to clothing equipped with small electric fans. The fans draw outside air into the garment and circulate it around the body. As sweat evaporates, the body is cooled naturally through evaporative cooling. This system does not work like a traditional air conditioner, but it can make outdoor and industrial work much more comfortable.

The name “Kuchofuku” (空調服) began to be used commercially in the early 2000s, and full-scale sales started around 2004. The products gradually became popular among construction workers, factory employees, delivery drivers, farmers, and others who work in hot environments.

The technology is protected by several patents related to fan placement, airflow, garment structure, safety equipment compatibility, and other improvements.

It is also important to understand that “Kuchofuku” is a registered trademark, not simply a general term. Other manufacturers usually describe similar products as fan-equipped workwear or electric fan clothing.

Today, many Japanese apparel companies sell this type of cooling workwear. Better batteries, lighter fans, and improved designs have also made the products popular for fishing, golf, gardening, outdoor events, and everyday summer use.

What began as one inventor’s simple idea has now become an important Japanese solution for working safely in extreme heat.
