“Mizu ni Nagasu” — Letting the Past Flow Away

Japanese has a meaningful expression: 「水に流す」 (mizu ni nagasu), which literally means “to let something flow away with the water.”

 

It is used when people decide to stop blaming each other for past mistakes, arguments, or misunderstandings. Rather than continuing to hold resentment, they agree to leave the problem behind and move forward.

 

In English, expressions such as “let bygones be bygones,” “forgive and forget,” or “bury the hatchet” are similar. However, mizu ni nagasu carries a distinctly Japanese image.

 

In Japanese culture, water has long been associated with purification. In Shinto traditions, people wash their hands and rinse their mouths before entering a shrine. This act is not simply about physical cleanliness. It represents cleansing the heart and mind.

 

The same idea can be found in human relationships. To “let something flow away” does not necessarily mean pretending that nothing happened. It means recognizing the problem, accepting that it belongs to the past, and choosing not to carry the anger into the future.

 

Relationships cannot survive if every mistake is remembered forever. Sometimes, both sides must stop trying to prove who was right and decide that restoring the relationship is more important than winning the argument.

 

“Mizu ni nagasu” is therefore more than forgiveness. It is a Japanese expression that symbolizes reconciliation, emotional cleansing, and the courage to begin again.
