Kotodama: Why Japanese People Believe Words Matter

One of the concepts I grew up with in Japan is Kotodama (言霊), often translated as "the spirit of words." While it may sound mystical, I think there is practical wisdom behind it.

 

The traditional belief is that the words we speak have the power to influence people, situations, and even our own future. Whether or not you believe words possess a spiritual force, it is difficult to deny that they affect our thoughts, attitudes, and relationships.

 

As someone who has lived in both Japan and the United States for many years, I have come to appreciate this idea even more. A few encouraging words can motivate a person to try again. A sincere "thank you" can strengthen a friendship or business relationship. On the other hand, harsh or careless words can damage trust in just a few seconds.

 

Modern psychology explains this differently than ancient Japanese tradition. It tells us that positive communication and constructive self-talk can improve confidence, resilience, and emotional well-being. To me, that is another way of understanding Kotodama. The words themselves may not have supernatural power, but the people who hear them certainly do.

 

This is one reason Japanese culture places such importance on speaking respectfully and thinking before talking. It is not simply about being polite. It is about recognizing that words leave lasting impressions.

 

In today's world, especially on social media, we often see people using words as weapons. Perhaps this is a good time to remember Kotodama. Before posting a comment or responding in anger, ask yourself whether your words will make the situation better or worse.

 

I believe words have consequences. They can inspire innovation, build friendships, create opportunities, or destroy them. Whether you call it Kotodama, emotional intelligence, or simply common courtesy, the principle is timeless:
