The Origin and Meaning of "Buying Cheap Means Buying Twice" (安物買いの銭失い)
One of Japan's most practical proverbs is 「安物買いの銭失い」 (Yasumono-gai no Zeni-ushinai). Literally translated, it means "Buying cheap goods causes you to lose money." A more natural English equivalent is "Buy cheap, buy twice."
This saying dates back to Japan's Edo period (1603–1868), when trade flourished and cities such as Edo (Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto became bustling commercial centers. As merchants competed to attract customers, buyers discovered that the lowest-priced products were not always the best value. Cheap goods often wore out quickly or failed to perform as expected, forcing people to spend even more money replacing them.
The proverb teaches that true value is measured by quality and durability, not simply by price. Spending a little more on a well-made product can save money, time, and frustration in the long run.
The lesson applies far beyond shopping. Whether choosing business equipment, software, tools, or even professional services, the cheapest option is not always the most economical. Investing in quality often results in lower maintenance costs, greater reliability, and better overall satisfaction.
This proverb also carries an important lesson for businesses. There is nothing wrong with offering discounts, seasonal promotions, or flash sales to attract customers. These can be effective marketing tools. However, if a company's only competitive advantage is offering the lowest price, it may be time to rethink its business strategy. Sustainable businesses succeed by delivering value through quality, innovation, service, reliability, or a superior customer experience—not simply by being the cheapest.
More than 300 years after it first became popular, 「安物買いの銭失い」 remains as relevant as ever. In a world filled with online bargains and discount offers, this Japanese proverb reminds us to look beyond the price tag and consider the total value of what we buy. Sometimes, paying more today is the smartest way to save tomorrow.
