Taichiro Morinaga: More Than a Candy Maker
Taichiro Morinaga was not simply the founder of one of Japan’s best-known confectionery companies. He was also an industrial pioneer who helped introduce new products, working practices, and technologies to modern Japan.
Morinaga traveled to the United States as a young man and learned how Western-style confectionery was produced. After returning to Japan, he established Morinaga’s Western Confectionery Shop in Tokyo in 1899. At the time, products such as caramel, marshmallows, chocolate, and biscuits were still unfamiliar to most Japanese consumers.
Morinaga believed that Western sweets could become part of everyday Japanese life. His company eventually developed popular products such as milk caramel, chocolate, cocoa, biscuits, and powdered milk. What began as a small confectionery business grew into Morinaga & Co., one of Japan’s most recognized food manufacturers.
Morinaga was also progressive in the way he treated employees. The company introduced an eight-hour working day at a time when extremely long working hours were common in Japan. This demonstrated that industrial growth did not necessarily require the exploitation of workers.
The company’s contribution extended beyond food. During World War II, Morinaga researchers became involved in the domestic production of penicillin, which was urgently needed to treat bacterial infections. This work took place after Taichiro Morinaga’s death, but it reflected the company’s continuing emphasis on science and innovation.
Taichiro Morinaga should therefore be remembered as more than a candy maker. He helped sweeten Japan, modernize its food industry, improve working conditions, and establish a company capable of contributing to medicine as well as confectionery.
