Nagoya: Japan's Most Overlooked Great City

 

When people talk about Japan, they usually mention Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka. Tokyo is the political and economic capital, Kyoto represents traditional culture, and Osaka is famous for commerce and food. But almost exactly between Tokyo and Osaka is another major city that deserves far more attention: Nagoya, the historic center of Owari Province.

 

For centuries, Owari occupied one of Japan's most important strategic locations. Travelers, merchants, and armies moving between eastern and western Japan passed through the region. Owari was also the birthplace of Oda Nobunaga, the first of Japan's three great unifiers, and later became the territory of the powerful Owari branch of the Tokugawa family.

 

Today, Nagoya remains a major transportation and industrial center. Nagoya Station is one of the most important stops on the Tokaido Shinkansen, connecting the city directly with Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. The region is also home to Chubu Centrair International Airport, another major Japanese airport built on a man-made island.

 

Nagoya is best known as the heart of Japan's manufacturing economy. Toyota and many leading companies in automobiles, aerospace, ceramics, machinery, and advanced engineering are based in the region.

 

The city also has its own unique food culture. Visitors can enjoy miso katsu, flat kishimen noodles, and Nagoya's famous coffee shop “morning service,” where coffee often comes with toast, eggs, or other breakfast items.

 

Nagoya may not seek the spotlight, but its importance is undeniable. Historically, economically, and culturally, it is one of Japan's truly great cities.
