Another Japanese Craftsman Who Built a Global Business

When people think of global Japanese companies, names like Toyota, Sony, or Panasonic usually come to mind. But behind those famous brands are hundreds of lesser-known companies that quietly became world leaders by mastering a single craft.

One of them is Nakashima Propeller Co., Ltd.

The company began in 1926, not as a propeller manufacturer, but as a small family-owned copper alloy foundry in Okayama. Its founder, Zenichi Nakashima, was a skilled metal craftsman who chose copper alloy casting rather than competing directly with his former employer in iron casting. It was a decision based on respect, integrity, and confidence in his own craftsmanship.

Just two years later, a customer suggested that he try casting propellers for fishing boats. Zenichi saw more than a business opportunity—he recognized that an island nation like Japan would always depend on ships. He accepted the challenge, and that single decision changed the company's future forever.

The road was far from easy. During World War II, the company's factory was destroyed in the air raids on Okayama. Many businesses would have disappeared. Instead, Zenichi and his family rebuilt the company from the ground up, focusing once again on what they knew best: making exceptional propellers.

Nearly a century later, Nakashima Propeller has become one of the world's leading marine propulsion companies. Its custom-designed propellers power everything from fishing boats to massive container ships and LNG carriers. Today, the company holds roughly 30% of the global market for large fixed-pitch marine propellers while continuing to innovate in energy-saving propulsion technologies.

What impresses me most is that this success did not begin with a revolutionary invention or billions of dollars in investment. It started with one craftsman who continually refined his skills, listened to his customers, embraced new challenges, and never compromised on quality.

This is a pattern I see repeatedly in Japan.

A craftsman becomes a specialist.

The specialist becomes the best.

The best earns the trust of customers around the world.

Global success often begins not with trying to do everything, but by becoming exceptionally good at one thing.
