Hyakunin Hyakuyō: A Lesson for Software Development

One Japanese expression I have always liked is "Hyakunin Hyakuyō" (百人百様)—"One hundred people, one hundred different ways."

This proverb helps explain why Japan has been so successful in engineering, yet is often considered weaker in software.

In hardware, quality is measurable. A car engine either meets specifications or it doesn't. A camera lens is either sharp or it isn't. Engineers work toward objective standards, an area where Japan has long excelled through precision, discipline, and continuous improvement.

Software is different.

Ask one hundred software engineers to solve the same problem, and you'll likely get one hundred different solutions. Many of them may be correct. Choosing the "best" one is often subjective, depending on performance, maintainability, scalability, or user experience rather than a single measurable standard.

This is where Hyakunin Hyakuyō comes to life.

The good news is that AI may change the game. AI can generate, compare, and refine multiple solutions in seconds, making it easier to evaluate many approaches instead of relying on just one. That plays to Japan's strengths. Combining world-class engineering discipline with AI-assisted software development could help Japan become as competitive in software as it has long been in hardware.

Perhaps Japan's software story is just beginning.
