「備えあれば憂いなし」 — Can We Prepare for the Unexpected?

 

One of Japan's best-known proverbs is:

 

「備えあれば憂いなし」 (Sonae areba urei nashi)

 

A natural English translation is:

 

"Be prepared, and there will be no cause for worry."

 

It teaches a timeless lesson: good preparation reduces anxiety and helps us respond calmly when challenges arise.

 

But in today's world, I wonder if that wisdom needs one more layer.

 

The Great East Japan Earthquake, the global pandemic, large-scale cyberattacks, and increasingly extreme weather all had one thing in common—they reminded us that the unexpected does happen.

 

Of course, no one can predict every crisis. That is impossible.

 

Instead, perhaps the real lesson is to prepare with the understanding that something unexpected will eventually occur.

 

For a business, that may mean maintaining off-site backups, avoiding dependence on a single supplier, having multiple communication channels, or developing a disaster recovery plan. For a family, it may mean keeping emergency supplies, knowing evacuation routes, and having a plan for staying in touch during a crisis.

 

These preparations are not about predicting a specific event. They are about building resilience for events we cannot predict.

 

The old Japanese proverb remains as relevant today as it was centuries ago.
