Honor Over Glory

 

History often remembers victories, battles, and conquests. Yet sometimes the greatest act of courage is not defeating an enemy, but showing compassion to one.

 

On March 2, 1942, following the Battle of the Java Sea, the British heavy cruiser HMS Exeter and the destroyer HMS Encounter were sunk by Japanese forces. Hundreds of British sailors were left struggling to survive in the open sea.

 

Stopping to rescue enemy survivors during wartime was extremely dangerous. An enemy submarine could have been nearby, and remaining stationary made a ship an easy target. Nevertheless, Commander Shunsaku Kudō, captain of the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer Ikazuchi, chose humanity over military convenience.

 

Ikazuchi rescued approximately 422 British sailors from the water. The exhausted survivors were given food, water, and medical care despite being enemy combatants. The rescue delayed the destroyer's mission and exposed both the ship and her crew to considerable risk.

 

Many of those rescued never forgot the kindness they received. One of them, Sir Samuel Falle, who later became a British ambassador, publicly praised Commander Kudō's compassion decades after the war.

 

War inevitably creates enemies, but it does not erase our shared humanity. Commander Kudō understood that honor is measured not only by victories in battle, but also by the choices we make when no one expects mercy.

 

His decision reminds us that true strength is not found in the ability to destroy an enemy, but in the courage to preserve life—even the life of an enemy.

 

Honor lasts far longer than glory.
