Why Can't Princess Aiko Become Japan's Next Emperor?

Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito, cannot become Japan's next Emperor under the country's current law.

The Imperial House Law of 1947 limits succession to male descendants in the paternal (male) line of the Imperial Family. Because Princess Aiko is female, she is not eligible to inherit the Chrysanthemum Throne. Instead, the next in line is Emperor Naruhito's younger brother, Crown Prince Akishino, followed by his son, Prince Hisahito.

Many people are surprised by this because Japan has had eight female emperors (ten reigns) throughout its history. However, those women served as temporary rulers within the existing imperial line, and the throne always returned to a male successor. None established a hereditary line through their own descendants.

For years, Japan has debated whether to change the law. Supporters argue that Princess Aiko is well-prepared for imperial duties and that allowing women to inherit the throne would help secure the future of the Imperial Family. Opponents believe the male-line succession is a tradition that has preserved the continuity of the imperial institution for centuries.

Whether the law will change remains one of the most important constitutional and cultural debates in modern Japan.
