What Business Leaders Can Learn from a Small Town Called Winthrop
I recently visited Winthrop, Washington, a small town on the eastern side of North Cascades National Park.
It looks like an authentic Old West town, but there's a surprising story behind it.
By the 1970s, Winthrop's traditional industries—mining, logging, and ranching—were in decline. Then came the construction of the North Cascades Highway (SR 20), bringing thousands of travelers through the valley.
The community faced a choice:
Would people simply drive through Winthrop, or would they stop and spend time there?
Instead of hoping for the best, the town reinvented itself. Local businesses adopted a consistent Old West theme, transforming the entire downtown into a memorable destination.
More than 50 years later, that strategy is still attracting visitors from around the world.
There is a lesson here for every business leader.
Markets change. Technology changes. Customer expectations change. Companies that cling to yesterday's business model risk becoming irrelevant.
Reinvention doesn't mean abandoning your identity. It means finding new ways to create value while staying true to your core strengths.
The best companies don't wait until they are in trouble to change. They evolve before they have to.
Winthrop reminds us that success often belongs not to the biggest or the oldest, but to those willing to adapt.
Ask yourself: Are customers simply passing by your business, or have you given them a compelling reason to stop?
