"Life Is But Fifty Years" — A Timeless Japanese Reflection on Life

 

One of the most famous passages in Japanese history is:

 

"Jinkan gojū-nen, geten no uchi o kurabureba, mugen no gotoku nari. Hitotabi sei o ete, messenu mono no arubeki ka."

 

A natural English translation is:

 

"Human life is but fifty years. Compared with the passage of time in the heavenly realm, it is no more than a dream or an illusion. Once born into this world, who can escape death?"

 

Many people associate these words with the samurai warlord Oda Nobunaga because he famously performed them before important battles, including the Battle of Okehazama. However, they were not written by Nobunaga. The passage comes from the 15th-century Kōwakamai performance Atsumori, whose author remains unknown.

 

The phrase "fifty years" does not mean that people only lived to be fifty. Instead, it expresses the Buddhist idea of impermanence. Compared to the vast scale of time, a human life—even a long one—is brief.

 

The message remains relevant today. Whether we live fifty years, eighty years, or one hundred years, our time is limited. What matters is not simply how long we live, but how we choose to spend the time we have.

 

This timeless Japanese teaching reminds us to appreciate each day, pursue meaningful goals, and leave behind something of value for others.
