Europe’s Heat Wave and the Air Conditioning Question

 

Recent news reports say that parts of Europe are experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures reaching over 40°C.

 

This reminds me of my trip to Europe in July 2015, mainly in Germany. I clearly remember the temperature also going over 40°C at that time. But what surprised me even more was that many restaurants and hotels did not have air conditioning.

 

Coming from Japan and the United States, that was hard to imagine.

 

In Japan and the U.S., air conditioning is common. In many areas, the installation rate is over 90%. In contrast, many European countries still have much lower air conditioning usage. Some countries may even be below 10%, especially in cooler northern and western regions.

 

There is a reason for this.

 

For many years, Europe had a relatively mild climate. Summers were not as long, hot, or humid as they are in parts of Asia or the United States. In Japan, much of Asia, and the American South, air conditioning is not a luxury. It is almost a necessity because of heat and humidity.

 

Europe did not need it as much in the past.

 

But the situation appears to be changing.

 

If hot summers become more common in Europe, air conditioning will likely become much more popular. That will create a new question: can the power grid handle it?

 

Air conditioners consume a lot of electricity. If millions of homes, hotels, restaurants, and offices begin installing and using them at the same time, Europe will need more reliable power generation and stronger transmission infrastructure.

 

Climate change discussions often focus on renewable energy. That is important. But stable electricity supply is just as important.

 

Buying air conditioners may solve the heat problem inside buildings. But it may also create a much larger challenge outside them.

 

Europe may soon have to deal with two problems at the same time: hotter summers and higher electricity demand.
