JR Yotsuya Station — Home of Japan's Most Famous Ghost Story

 

If you ever pass through JR Yotsuya Station in Tokyo, you're standing near the birthplace of Yotsuya Kaidan (四谷怪談), widely considered Japan's most famous ghost story.

 

The story, written by Tsuruya Nanboku IV and first performed as a Kabuki play in 1825, tells the tragic tale of Oiwa, a woman betrayed by her husband, Tamiya Iemon. After being poisoned and disfigured, Oiwa dies and returns as an onryō—a vengeful spirit—to haunt those who wronged her.

 

The influence of Yotsuya Kaidan on Japanese horror is enormous. It has been adapted into more than 30 films, countless Kabuki productions, and has shaped the image of the long-haired female ghost seen in modern Japanese horror classics such as Ring and Ju-On.

 

Even today, many actors and filmmakers visit Oiwa Inari Shrine before performing or filming Yotsuya Kaidan, believing it is wise to pay their respects to Oiwa's spirit. It remains one of Tokyo's best-known haunted landmarks.
