What CEOs Can Learn from the Chinese Communist Party

Before anyone misunderstands this post, learning from someone does not mean agreeing with their political system.

As business leaders, our job is to study what works—even when it comes from a competitor.

One lesson is long-term thinking. While many publicly traded companies are under constant pressure to deliver the next quarter's results, China often executes plans that span 10, 20, or even 30 years. Great companies also need a vision beyond the next earnings report.

Another lesson is building ecosystems instead of products. China didn't simply manufacture electric vehicles. It invested in batteries, supply chains, infrastructure, engineering talent, and logistics. Sustainable competitive advantage is rarely built in isolation.

A third lesson is execution. Once a strategic direction is chosen, resources are aligned and decisions move quickly. In business, speed often beats perfection.

Finally, China has consistently invested in manufacturing, engineering, and technical education. Those investments may not maximize short-term profits, but they build capabilities that competitors cannot easily replicate.

That doesn't mean businesses should copy everything. Innovation requires open discussion, transparency, accountability, and the freedom for employees to challenge assumptions. Those remain essential strengths of successful organizations.

As CEOs, we should separate management practices from political ideology. Learn from every competitor. Adopt what makes your organization stronger. Ignore what conflicts with your values.

The best leaders aren't afraid to study their competition—they're afraid of underestimating it.
