Do Not Look for a Way to Win After the War Has Started
Sun Tzu wrote in The Art of War:

 

“The victorious army first wins and then goes to battle. The defeated army first goes to battle and then seeks victory.”
This is an important lesson not only in war, but also in business and life.

 

Many people start a fight, launch a business, or make a big decision without enough preparation. Then, after they are already committed, they begin looking for a way to win. By then, it may be too late.

 

The better approach is to prepare first. Understand the market. Know your strengths. Study your competitors. Make sure you have the people, money, technology, and timing needed to succeed.

 

The best historical example of this philosophy in Japan is Tokugawa Ieyasu. More than simply winning battles, Ieyasu mastered the art of preparing for them. He patiently built alliances, strengthened his resources, and waited for the right opportunity before acting.

 

He perfectly embodied Sun Tzu's teaching:

 

「勝兵は先ず勝ちて而る後に戦い」
“The victorious army first wins and then goes to battle.”
His patience, careful planning, and willingness to wait for favorable conditions enabled him to unify Japan and establish the Tokugawa shogunate, ushering in more than 260 years of relative peace.

 

A battle you must win is often a battle you should not start unless you already have a clear path to victory.

 

Winning does not begin when the fight starts. Winning begins long before that—with preparation, planning, and discipline.

 

That is the wisdom of Sun Tzu, and it remains just as relevant today as it was more than 2,500 years ago.
