A Timeless Japanese Lesson on Leadership
One of Japan's most famous leadership quotes is attributed to Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto:
"Show them how to do it. Explain it to them. Let them try it themselves. Praise them. Otherwise, people will not be motivated."
This simple statement captures a timeless philosophy of leadership. People are rarely inspired by orders alone. They learn by watching, by understanding the purpose behind a task, by gaining hands-on experience, and by having their efforts recognized.
Although Admiral Yamamoto is best known as a military leader, this lesson extends far beyond the military. It applies to business, education, parenting, coaching, and everyday leadership.
Great leaders don't simply tell people what to do—they teach, encourage, and help others succeed.
Personally, I hope people are even more self-motivated than this. The best employees, students, and leaders don't rely on praise to do their best. They are driven by curiosity, purpose, responsibility, and a desire for continuous improvement. Recognition is always appreciated, but true excellence comes from within.
