Probatio Diabolica (The Devil's Proof)

There is a concept known as Probatio Diabolica, a Latin phrase often translated as "the Devil's Proof."

It refers to the difficulty—or sometimes the impossibility—of proving that something does not exist or never happened.

For example, imagine someone says, "Prove that ghosts do not exist." To prove that conclusively, you would have to search every place, at every moment in time, throughout the entire universe. In practice, that is impossible.

One of the most common mistakes in debates is when someone makes a claim without providing evidence and then challenges the other person by saying, "If I'm wrong, prove it." In reality, the responsibility belongs to the person making the claim. This is known as the burden of proof.

The same principle applies in business. If someone demands, "Prove that this method will never fail," they are asking for the impossible. What matters is not proving a negative with absolute certainty, but presenting reasonable evidence, a solid track record, and appropriate risk management.

Probatio Diabolica is not just a clever phrase—it is an important principle for fair and rational discussion. If you make a claim, you should provide evidence to support it. Demanding that someone else prove the opposite, without first offering evidence for your own claim, is not a sound way to argue.

Whenever someone says, "Prove that it didn't happen," it's worth pausing for a moment.

Is that really something that can be proven?

Or are they simply asking for Probatio Diabolica?

Politicians often rely on this tactic. Instead of presenting evidence, they ask questions that cannot realistically be answered or proven, such as:

"Prove that you never did ________."

That shifts the burden of proof away from the accuser and onto the accused. It may be an effective political strategy, but it is not sound logic.

A fair debate begins with evidence—not with impossible demands.
