"It's Easier Than You Think Once You Begin" – A Japanese Proverb

 

One of my favorite Japanese proverbs is:

 

案ずるより産むが易し
Anzuru yori umu ga yasushi

 

A literal translation is:

 

"Giving birth is easier than worrying about it."

 

Since I am a man, I cannot personally verify whether giving birth is actually easier than worrying about it. However, the proverb isn't really about childbirth—it's about human nature.

 

It comes from the idea that before giving birth, people naturally worry about what will happen. Yet once the moment arrives, they focus on the task at hand and often discover that their fears were greater than the reality.

 

Today, the saying has a much broader meaning:

 

Don't let worry stop you from taking the first step. Many things turn out to be easier than you imagined once you actually begin.

 

This applies to starting a business, learning a new skill, changing careers, or simply trying something you've never done before. Planning is important, but endless worrying rarely solves problems. Action does.

 

In English, there isn't a perfect equivalent, but these expressions capture a similar idea:

 

"The hardest part is getting started."
"You'll never know until you try."
"Don't cross the bridge until you come to it."

 

The next time you find yourself overthinking a challenge, remember this old Japanese wisdom:

 

案ずるより産むが易し
