"Good Fortune Comes to Those Who Wait" — A Japanese Proverb
One of my favorite Japanese proverbs is:

 

「果報は寝て待て」 (Kahō wa Nete Mate)

 

A literal translation is, "Lie down and wait for good fortune." Of course, it does not mean that you should be lazy or do nothing. The proverb teaches something much deeper.

 

The word "kahō" (果報) comes from Buddhism. It refers to the results or rewards that come from one's actions. In other words, after you have done everything you can, there is no benefit in worrying or becoming impatient. Sometimes the best thing you can do is wait calmly for the results.

 

This idea is especially important in business. Success rarely happens overnight. Building a company, developing a product, earning customers' trust, or expanding into a new market all take time. Once you have made the right decisions and put in your best effort, constantly worrying will not make success come any faster.

 

Interestingly, in Japan there is also a humorous variation of this proverb:

 

「果報は練って待て」

 

The word 寝て (nete), meaning "sleep," is replaced with 練って (nette), meaning "to refine," "to polish," or "to work something over carefully."

 

Instead of simply waiting, this playful version suggests that while waiting for good fortune, continue refining your ideas, improving your products, and preparing yourself. It reflects a very practical business mindset: patience is important, but so is continuous improvement.

 

Personally, I like this version just as much. While some things are beyond our control, there is almost always something we can improve. Waiting doesn't have to mean doing nothing.

 

Whether you choose to "sleep and wait" or "refine and wait," the message is the same: do your best, trust the process, and don't let impatience prevent success from arriving.
