Today, I would like to talk about Kamon, Japanese family crests.

 

Kamon are symbols used to represent a family or clan in Japan. Their history goes back nearly 1,000 years. Today, they are known as family symbols, but their origin was not connected to war.

 

The roots of Kamon go back to the Heian period. At that time, aristocrats used ox-drawn carriages, but many of them looked very similar. To identify their own carriages and belongings, they began decorating them with beautiful patterns such as wisteria, paulownia, quince flowers, and butterflies.

 

This is believed to be the beginning of Kamon.

 

In modern terms, the first Kamon were more like personal logos or name tags. They simply meant, “This belongs to me.”

 

Later, samurai began using Kamon on flags, armor, and battlefield equipment to identify their families and allies. Over time, Kamon spread throughout Japan and became part of everyday culture.

 

Today, Japan has tens of thousands of Kamon designs. Each one carries history, meaning, and family identity.

 

A Kamon is not just a design. It is a small symbol that carries a long story.
