“Okagesama” — A Japanese Expression with Deep Meaning
One Japanese expression that is difficult to translate directly into English is “Okagesama” (おかげさま). It is a phrase many Japanese people use every day, often without thinking about its deeper meaning.
If someone asks, “How are you?” a common response is:
“Okagesama de genki desu.”
While this is often translated as “Thanks to you, I am doing well,” the meaning goes much further.
The word “kage” (陰) originally means shadow or shade. In traditional Japanese thought, the blessings and protection of gods, nature, ancestors, family, and other people were often seen as unseen forces quietly supporting our lives, much like a shadow that is present but not always noticed.
From this idea came the word “okage,” which refers to the support and blessings we receive from others. Therefore, when someone says “Okagesama de,” they are acknowledging that their health, success, or happiness is not entirely their own achievement.
The expression reflects an important aspect of Japanese culture: humility and gratitude. Rather than saying, “I did it myself,” it recognizes that many people and circumstances contributed to the outcome.
The phrase is also connected to Japan’s traditional Shinto worldview, where divine spirits, or kami, are believed to exist throughout nature and everyday life.
In a world that often emphasizes individual accomplishment, “Okagesama” reminds us that none of us succeeds alone. It is a simple phrase that carries a profound sense of appreciation for both the visible and invisible support that surrounds us.
