Why Does Japan Have So Many Family Names?

 

One thing that surprises many foreigners is the sheer number of Japanese family names. Depending on how they are counted, Japan is believed to have more than 100,000 surnames, and some estimates exceed 300,000 when different kanji spellings and regional variations are included.

 

Compare that with neighboring countries. China is estimated to have about 4,000 to 6,000 surnames, while Korea has only a few hundred. In Korea, surnames such as Kim, Lee, and Park account for a large percentage of the population. In China, names like Wang, Li, Zhang, and Liu are shared by tens of millions of people.

 

Why is Japan different?

 

The answer lies in history. Before the Meiji Restoration in the late 1800s, official family names were mostly used by samurai and nobles. When the Meiji government required every citizen to register a surname, millions of ordinary people had to choose one.

 

Many selected names based on local geography. Mountains, rivers, rice fields, villages, and landmarks became family names. That is why so many Japanese surnames have meanings tied to the land: Tanaka ("middle of the rice field"), Yamamoto ("base of the mountain"), and Nakamura ("middle village") are just a few examples.

 

Japan's mountainous terrain also contributed to this diversity. Communities were often isolated, allowing unique local surnames to develop and survive for generations.

 

My own surname, Uchikura (内倉), is a good example. It is relatively uncommon and is associated with southern Kyushu, particularly the Kagoshima area. The name literally means "inner storehouse." While it is difficult to trace the exact origin of any particular family line, it likely referred to a family living near, managing, or owning a storehouse. In agricultural Japan, such practical descriptions often became permanent surnames.

 

Unlike common surnames shared by millions, names like Uchikura carry a connection to a specific region and a piece of local history. That diversity is one of the unique and fascinating characteristics of Japan.
