Do Your Best and Leave the Rest to Heaven

 

One of the most famous sayings in Japan is:

 

人事を尽くして天命を待つ
"Jinji o Tsukushite Tenmei o Matsu"

 

Do your best and leave the rest to Heaven.

 

Many people think this is a Japanese proverb, but its roots actually come from China. The original Chinese expression is:

 

尽人事，听天命

 

"Fulfill all human responsibilities and then accept Heaven's will."

 

Japan adopted many ideas from Chinese civilization, including Kanji, Confucian philosophy, and countless classical sayings. This phrase is one example of that shared cultural heritage, and China deserves credit for its origin.

 

As a business owner, I have always appreciated the practical wisdom behind these words. Success is never achieved by luck alone. We must work hard, serve our customers well, support our employees, plan carefully, and continuously improve. Those are the things we can control.

 

At the same time, there are many things we cannot control—economic conditions, exchange rates, political events, and unexpected challenges. Once we have done everything reasonably possible, worrying about the outcome serves little purpose.

 

During my recent trip to Japan, I visited Nishinomiya Shrine, known for Ebisu, the deity associated with business prosperity. I brought back a wooden talisman and placed it in our company lobby. I do not believe the talisman itself creates success. Rather, it serves as a reminder to do our part every day while remaining humble and grateful.

 

The lesson is simple:

 

Do everything you can. Then accept the result.

 

That is wisdom from ancient China, embraced by Japan, and still relevant in business today.
