Japanese Companies Losing on Price — But Was That Really the Right Choice?
Boston’s subway and commuter rail system introduced railcars made by the Chinese manufacturer CRRC after the company won contracts with prices far lower than Japanese and American competitors.

 

When the difference is nearly half the price, public agencies naturally choose the cheaper option. Taxpayer money makes cost reduction a major priority.

 

However, after deployment, reports emerged about quality problems, delivery delays, parts shortages, and maintenance issues. Questions about long-term safety and reliability continue.

 

Japanese railcars are known for quality, safety, and long-term stability. But maintaining that level of quality costs money, and Japanese companies often lose in pure price competition.

 

The real question is this: Is the cheapest option truly the best value?

 

Railcars are infrastructure expected to operate for decades. When failure rates, maintenance costs, service interruptions, and safety are considered, the lowest initial price may not be the lowest long-term cost.

 

This challenge is not limited to railways. Many Japanese industries face the same issue — winning on quality, but losing on price.
