Japan’s Type 10 tank is much smaller and lighter than tanks from the U.S., Russia, China, or South Korea because it was designed specifically for Japan’s environment and defense strategy.

 

Japan is a mountainous island nation with narrow roads, smaller bridges, tunnels, and dense urban areas. Extremely heavy tanks like the 70-ton American M1 Abrams would have difficulty moving through much of Japan’s infrastructure. The Type 10, at around 44 tons, was designed to move quickly across Japan using existing roads and transport systems.

 

Japan’s military doctrine is also defensive. Unlike countries preparing for large-scale land invasions across huge plains, Japan expects armored combat to happen domestically in tighter terrain where mobility matters more than maximum armor thickness.

 

Instead of relying only on weight, the Type 10 uses advanced electronics, modular composite armor, and modern fire-control systems.

 

The Type 10 can also be fitted with rubber-coated caterpillar tracks to help protect pavement and public roads during transport and urban movement.

 

Side note: Japanese Type 10 tanks even have turn signals and brake lights (which can be turned off) because they are designed to legally operate on public roads inside Japan. They can even carry license plates when traveling on public highways.
