Mazda’s Gram Strategy
Mazda is famous for its “Gram Strategy,” the idea of reducing car weight one gram at a time.
Instead of only looking for big weight reductions, Mazda engineers examine every part: bolts, mirrors, seats, brackets, body panels, and even small interior pieces. One gram may seem meaningless, but when thousands of parts are improved, the total weight reduction becomes significant.
Mazda used this thinking in cars like the MX-5 Miata and Mazda2. Mazda’s engineers focused on removing unnecessary weight from every component without sacrificing reliability or performance.
The lesson is simple: improvement does not always come from one massive breakthrough. Real progress often comes from hundreds or thousands of small improvements accumulated over time.
That philosophy applies directly to software and SaaS systems as well.
At PSPINC, we take a very similar approach to system development and operations. We constantly look for small inefficiencies, unnecessary processes, wasted bandwidth, extra clicks, slow database calls, redundant code, and anything else that adds friction to the user experience or operational cost.
One optimization by itself may not seem important. But when you improve thousands of small things, the entire system becomes faster, more stable, more secure, and easier to maintain.
Good engineering is not always about adding more.
Sometimes it is about removing one gram at a time.
Sometimes it is about removing one gram at a time.
