What Is Yakuza? The Meaning Behind 8-9-3

 

Many people know the word “Yakuza” as Japan’s organized crime groups, but fewer know where the word itself comes from.

 

The origin is surprisingly tied to an old Japanese gambling card game similar to baccarat called Oicho-Kabu.

 

In this game, players often used Hanafuda—traditional Japanese playing cards known for their artistic floral designs.

 

Oicho-Kabu is simple in concept: players try to get as close to 9 as possible. But one hand was considered especially worthless:

 

8 (ya) + 9 (ku) + 3 (za) = 20
Only the last digit counts, so 20 becomes 0.

 

That hand—8, 9, 3—was essentially useless.

 

From this, “ya-ku-za” came to mean something or someone with little value, a person outside useful society, or a gambler with poor prospects. Over time, the term became associated with outcasts, street gangs, and eventually Japan’s criminal underworld.

 

So “Yakuza” did not originally mean mafia.

 

It literally referred to a bad hand… a losing combination.

 

In an interesting cultural sense, the word reflects how society once viewed those living outside conventional rules—not as powerful criminals, but as people who had become “zero.”

 

Sometimes language carries history in unexpected ways. In this case, three numbers—8, 9, and 3—became one of Japan’s most recognized words.

 

P.S. Nintendo, now famous worldwide for Mario and video games, actually began in 1889 as a Hanafuda card manufacturer in Kyoto. And yes—they still produce Hanafuda cards today. Sometimes history takes unexpected turns.
