I Eat Eggs Anytime of the Day… Even Raw

One thing that often surprises Americans is how casually many Japanese people eat eggs—not just for breakfast, but anytime of the day.

For me, eggs are not “breakfast food.”
They are simply food.

Morning? Egg over rice.
Lunch? Tamagoyaki or egg sandwich.
Dinner? Oyakodon, omurice, ramen egg, or even sukiyaki with raw egg.

Yes… even raw.

In Japan, eating raw egg is normal when the eggs are properly handled and fresh. Tamago kake gohan—hot rice with a raw egg mixed in—is one of the simplest and most comforting meals imaginable. For many Japanese, this is not strange at all. It’s everyday life.

In the United States, however, raw eggs often trigger immediate concern, and eggs themselves are strongly tied to breakfast culture.

This difference is fascinating.

Japan tends to focus on practicality and versatility:
If it tastes good and is safe, why limit it?
