Starbucks Took Almost 20 Years to Realize What Tottori Already Knew

 

When Starbucks opened its first store in Japan’s Ginza district in 1996, it began a nationwide expansion that eventually reached nearly every corner of the country. But one place remained untouched for almost two decades: Tottori Prefecture.

 

Tottori, Japan’s least populated prefecture, became known as the last holdout—the only prefecture without a Starbucks until May 23, 2015. For years, that absence was treated almost like a joke. Small population, limited market, low priority.

 

But here’s where the story gets interesting.

 

Tottori was never a place without coffee culture. In fact, despite its smaller population, Tottori had long shown strong coffee consumption per capita. The issue was not lack of demand—it was corporate expansion logic.

 

Starbucks wasn’t discovering coffee drinkers in Tottori. Tottori already had them.

 

Some local stories even connect Tottori’s deep coffee roots to postwar relief after the 1952 Tottori City fire, when instant coffee may have first become familiar to many residents. Whether fully proven or partly legend, one thing is certain: coffee was part of Tottori long before Starbucks arrived.

 

Sometimes big companies mistake population size for opportunity.
