When Politics Tells Business to Leave, Business Eventually Listens

 

If a mayor—especially one driven more by ideology than economics—tells people to boycott companies that helped build and support the city, that may sound powerful on a political stage.

 

But let’s be realistic.

 

Companies are not charities. They create jobs, pay taxes, occupy office space, support restaurants, fund services, and help cities grow. If political leadership treats successful businesses like enemies simply because they are profitable or politically inconvenient, those businesses will eventually move.

 

And when they move, they take jobs, tax revenue, and opportunity with them.

 

This is not theory. Cities like Seattle, New York, and San Francisco already risk pushing businesses away when politics becomes punishment.

 

You can dislike corporate behavior. You can regulate fairly. But openly encouraging boycotts against the very companies supporting your economy can become self-inflicted damage.

 

Leadership is not about ideological applause.
It is about protecting the future of the city.

 

If politicians make business feel unwanted, business will find somewhere it is wanted.

 

And when that happens, the people who suffer most are usually not the politicians.

 

It’s the workers. The small businesses. The taxpayers.
