Major Earthquake Off Northern Japan — Stay Alert

 

A major 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan today, April 20, 2026, at approximately 4:53 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean off the Sanriku coast near Iwate Prefecture, at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers.

 

Earthquakes of this magnitude, especially at shallow depths, have the potential to cause significant ground shaking and trigger secondary hazards. In this case, tsunami activity has already been reported, with waves expected to reach between 1 to 2 meters.

 

This is not a situation to take lightly.
