“Good Job” vs “Otsukaresama”

 

In the U.S., at the end of a job, project, or shift, people often say “Good job” or “Nice work.”
It’s a direct evaluation of the result.

 

You did well. The outcome was good. That’s the focus.

 

In Japan, people say “Otsukaresama.”
It doesn’t judge the result.

 

It recognizes the effort.

 

Even if the outcome isn’t perfect, the phrase still applies. It simply means: you worked hard, thank you for your effort.

 

That difference is subtle, but important.

 

One is result-based.
The other is effort-based.

 

Neither is right or wrong. They reflect how each culture views work.

 

In business, this difference matters more than people think.
If you only focus on results, you may overlook the people behind the work.
If you only focus on effort, you may lose sight of outcomes.

 

The balance is where real leadership begins.
