Uncomfortable to Japan … Defense as a Business

 

Japan has the technology. That’s not the issue.

 

The real question is whether Japan is willing to use it.

 

For decades after World War II, Japan avoided exporting weapons. That kept the country out of the global defense market while others scaled and gained experience. Today, the world is different. Many countries want alternatives to the United States, China, and Russia—and Japan is one of the few trusted options.

 

Companies like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries already produce high-quality systems. The capability is proven.

 

But hardware is not the main opportunity.

 

Modern defense is about systems—data, communication, cybersecurity, and control. Whoever controls the system controls the outcome. This is where Japan can lead.

 

So what needs to happen?

 

First, policy must move faster. Export approvals are still slow. In this market, slow means irrelevant.

 

Second, Japan must accept a hard truth: defense is a business. If Japan does not supply, someone else will—and they may not share the same standards or values.

 

Third, focus on integration, not volume. Japan will not win on price. It will win on trust, reliability, and secure systems.

 

Japan does not need to be the biggest supplier.

 

It needs to be the most trusted.

 

The capability is already there.

 

What’s missing is the decision.
