Weak Yen at 160 — Opportunity or Warning Sign?

 

At around ¥160 to the dollar, the weak yen looks like good news for Japan. Tourists flood in, hotels are full, and export companies look strong on paper. From the outside, it feels like Japan is winning.

 

But that’s only half the story.

 

Japan imports most of its energy, food, and raw materials. A weak yen makes all of that more expensive. That cost doesn’t stay on a balance sheet—it shows up in electricity bills, grocery prices, and daily life. Meanwhile, wages are not rising at the same pace. For many people and small businesses, this is not a benefit. It’s pressure.

 

Large exporters benefit. Domestic businesses and consumers pay the price.

 

From a U.S. business perspective, Japan becomes cheaper to enter. Investment, hiring, and acquisitions all look attractive. But selling into Japan gets harder. Your product becomes more expensive overnight, and revenue earned in yen shrinks when converted back to dollars.

 

So is a weak yen good for Japan?

 

Short term, maybe. Long term, it’s a warning sign.

 

A currency this weak doesn’t just boost tourism—it reveals structural imbalance.

 

Personally, I think a range of ¥125 to ¥135 per dollar is healthier.
Strong enough to control import costs, but not so strong that exports lose competitiveness.

 

The real opportunity is not the exchange rate.
It’s how you position your business around it.
