When a Ticket Gate Closes for Swallows

 

In Japan, there are moments that quietly show what a society truly values.

 

During swallow nesting season, train station ticket gates are sometimes temporarily closed. Not because of a system failure. Not because of construction.

 

Because swallows are raising their chicks.

 

At stations like Kamakura and Kunitachi, areas around the ticket checkpoints are blocked off to protect both passengers and the birds. Signs are posted:

 

“Swallows are raising their young.”

 

Automatic gates are shut down. People are redirected. There may be inconvenience—but there is no complaint.

 

And it goes further.

 

If a chick falls from the nest, station staff may install an artificial nest and carefully place it back.

 

Think about that.

 

In one of the most efficient railway systems in the world, operations are adjusted—not for profit, not for speed—but for a small life.

 

This is not about rules.
This is about culture.

 

Efficiency matters in Japan.
But it is not everything.

 

There is also patience.
There is also respect.
