Is a Strong U.S. Dollar Good for the U.S. Economy?
Short answer: No—when that strength comes from conflict and restrictions on energy flow.
A strong dollar can help in the short term. It lowers inflation by making imports—like energy and goods—cheaper. It increases purchasing power and attracts global capital into U.S. markets.
Right now, however, the dollar’s strength is not just about interest rates. It is being driven by geopolitical conflict and constrained oil supply. Many countries depend heavily on imported energy, while the U.S. is far less dependent due to domestic production. That relative advantage supports the dollar—but it is built on global instability.
There is also a downside.
A strong dollar makes U.S. exports more expensive and less competitive. It reduces the value of overseas earnings for American companies.
It is also not good for PSPINC, since one of our biggest markets is Japan. A weaker yen directly impacts purchasing power and business activity in that market.
And more importantly, financial and business markets want stability and sustainability—not prolonged conflict.
Strength built on disruption is not real strength.
