Why LINE Matters More Than SMS in Japan
When American companies think about customer communication, they usually think of email and SMS. In Japan, that approach does not work.
Japan runs on LINE.
LINE is not just a messaging app—it is the primary way people communicate with friends, family, and increasingly, businesses. Many users rarely check email, and SMS is mostly reserved for verification codes or urgent alerts. Marketing through SMS is expensive and often seen as intrusive.
Instead, businesses in Japan use LINE as their main customer engagement platform. Companies create official LINE accounts to send updates, distribute coupons, and communicate directly with customers. Walk into a restaurant or retail store and you will almost always see a QR code inviting you to “Add us on LINE.” This is not optional—it is expected.
The key difference is user behavior. In the U.S., SMS is a broadcast tool. In Japan, LINE is permission-based. Customers choose to follow a business, which creates a stronger relationship and higher engagement.
For U.S. companies entering Japan, this requires a mindset shift. Do not try to force SMS marketing into a market that does not want it.
If you want to succeed in Japan, you need to be where your customers already are.
In Japan, that place is LINE.
