A Story About Quality — And How We Define It
I once heard an interesting story.
A U.S. manufacturer placed an order with a Japanese company for 100,000 screws. Along with the order, they added a requirement: “Make sure the number of defective screws is 10 or less.”
Two weeks later, the shipment arrived.
Inside the box were 100,000 screws. But there was something unusual. Alongside the main batch, there were 10 screws carefully separated in small plastic bags.
A note was included:
“We delivered 100,000 screws and 10 defective screws.”
Of course, this is a joke. But like many good jokes, it carries a deeper truth.
What this story highlights is not just humor—it reflects a fundamental difference in how quality is approached.
In many Japanese manufacturing environments, quality is not just about meeting a requirement. It is about understanding it literally, respecting it fully, and delivering with precision and accountability. The idea is simple: if there are defects, they should be clearly identified, isolated, and acknowledged.
There is also an underlying mindset—don’t hide the problem. Show it. Document it. Take responsibility for it.
This way of thinking is deeply rooted in Japanese manufacturing culture, from small factories to global companies. It’s one of the reasons why “Made in Japan” became synonymous with reliability over the decades.
In contrast, many businesses interpret requirements more loosely—“as long as we are within tolerance, it’s fine.”
But the difference between meeting the requirement and honoring the requirement is significant.
This small story reminds me that quality is not just a metric. It is a mindset.
And sometimes, the difference shows up in the smallest things—like ten screws in a plastic bag.
