Businesses Are Moving Away

 

When businesses begin leaving a city or a state, it rarely happens overnight. At first, it is small signs. A company decides to open its next office somewhere else. Another company quietly moves part of its operations to another state. A startup decides not to launch locally but somewhere with lower costs.

 

Then the pattern becomes visible.

 

Large companies have options. They can move offices, relocate departments, or expand in other states where taxes are lower and regulations are more predictable. Smaller businesses usually do not have that luxury. When the cost of doing business becomes too high, many simply shut their doors.

 

This is not about politics. It is about economics.

 

For many years Seattle was a place where businesses wanted to be. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, and Boeing grew here because the environment allowed innovation and growth. The region attracted talent, investment, and entrepreneurs.

 

But environments can change.

 

When the cost of operating rises and policies make it harder to run a business, companies start to look elsewhere. States like Texas, Tennessee, and Florida are actively welcoming businesses with lower taxes and fewer barriers.

 

Cities and states compete for businesses whether they realize it or not.

 

If the environment becomes hostile, businesses will not stay out of loyalty. They will move to places where they are welcome.

 

And when enough of them leave, someone eventually puts up the sign:

 

“Will the last person to leave, please turn off the lights.”
