When Perfection Appears, Decline Begins — The Meaning of the Japanese Saying “満れば欠ける”

 

There is an old Japanese saying: 「満れば欠ける」 (Mitsureba Kakeru).

 

A simple translation would be:
“When something becomes full, it begins to decline.”

 

This idea reflects a deep observation about life and human nature. When something reaches what appears to be perfection or completion, that is often the moment when deterioration begins.

 

In other words, nothing in the world remains perfect forever.

 

Japanese culture often expresses this concept through stories and design choices. A well-known example can be found at Nikko Toshogu Shrine, one of Japan’s most famous historical sites.

 

At the shrine stands the beautiful Yomeimon Gate, an incredibly ornate structure covered with detailed carvings and decorations. It is considered one of the most magnificent gates in Japan. However, there is an interesting detail: one of the pillars is intentionally installed upside down.

 

Why would the builders do that?

 

According to tradition, if the gate were made completely perfect, it would begin to decline immediately. By leaving one element intentionally imperfect, the structure symbolically avoids reaching “perfect completion.”

 

This reflects the wisdom behind 「満れば欠ける」.

 

In modern terms, we might say something similar about technology, companies, or even societies. The moment something believes it has reached its final, perfect state — when it stops evolving — that is the moment it begins to decay.

 

Growth requires humility and the understanding that improvement never truly ends.
