Property Taxes Don’t Stay on Paper — They Hit Real People

 

When property taxes go up, that money doesn’t come from thin air. It comes out of the same household budget that pays for food, utilities, education, and transportation. Unless wages rise at the same pace — which they rarely do — families and small business owners feel the squeeze immediately.

 

In my case, King County increased my property tax by about 30%. As a small business owner, there is simply no realistic way for me to increase my own salary by 30% to offset that jump. Most small businesses operate on tight margins. When fixed costs rise sharply, something else has to give.

 

Even in the unlikely scenario where wages did rise at the same rate, workers would still lose ground because higher wages also mean higher income taxes. The net benefit shrinks quickly.

 

Renters should not assume they are insulated. Property taxes are one of the largest operating costs for landlords. When those costs rise, rents typically follow. Landlords are running businesses, not charities, and most will adjust pricing to remain solvent.

 

The bottom line is simple: large property tax increases ripple through the entire local economy. They reduce disposable income, pressure small businesses, and eventually push housing costs higher for everyone.
