To sustainably support a $20/hour wage plus medical insurance, the true cost to an employer is much higher than the hourly pay alone.

 

Start with the base wage. At $20/hour for a full-time employee (about 2,080 hours per year), annual pay equals $41,600. Employers must then add payroll taxes such as Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, and workers’ compensation. These typically add about 10–12%, bringing the loaded wage to roughly $45,000–$48,000 per year.

 

Next is health insurance. Employer-paid medical coverage commonly costs around $6,000–$9,000 annually for single coverage. Adding this brings the total direct employee cost to approximately $53,000–$57,000 per year.

 

However, salary and benefits are only part of the picture. Businesses must also cover overhead—management, office space, equipment, software, HR, and risk buffer. In many industries, the fully burdened cost of an employee reaches about $60,000–$70,000 annually.

 

For a business to remain healthy, an employee typically needs to generate 2 to 3 times their total cost in revenue. That means a worker paid $20/hour with benefits usually must produce roughly $130,000–$195,000 per year, or about $75–$95 per hour, to be economically sustainable.
