My King County Property Tax Went Up 30% — Seriously?
I just opened my latest King County property tax statement, and honestly, I’m frustrated. My property tax went up by about 30% in one year. Thirty percent. What is going on?
I understand that taxes don’t stay flat forever. Property values change, voters approve levies, and local governments need funding. But a jump like this does not feel reasonable or gradual. It feels like a shock to the system.
Most homeowners did not see their income rise anywhere close to 30% this year. Yet we are expected to simply absorb this increase as if it is normal. For many families — especially retirees and long-time residents — this kind of spike puts real pressure on household budgets.
What concerns me most is the lack of clear, proactive communication. If increases of this magnitude are coming, homeowners deserve better visibility and explanation ahead of time. Transparency and predictability matter.
There is also a broader impact. Rising property taxes eventually flow through to renters and local businesses, making the entire region more expensive.
Right now, it feels like the cost of staying in King County is rising much faster than many people can comfortably keep up with — and that is worth serious attention.
