Stirring the Bush and Finding a Snake

There is a Japanese proverb, “Yabu wo tsutsuite hebi wo dasu” — stir the bush and a snake appears. It describes a situation where unnecessary pressure creates the very outcome one hoped to avoid. I believe this proverb explains part of what happened in Japan’s recent election.

China’s clear discomfort with Prime Minister Takaichi and her political stance was widely noticed in Japan. However, rather than weakening her position, the external pressure had the opposite effect. Many Japanese voters, regardless of their individual political preferences, reacted negatively to what appeared to be outside influence on domestic politics. When people feel their country is being pressured from abroad, internal disagreements often become less important than national unity.

As a result, support consolidated around Takaichi and the Liberal Democratic Party. The election outcome — a super majority in the lower house — was not simply a reflection of policy approval, but also a reaction to the broader geopolitical environment. Voters chose stability and self-determination over uncertainty.

This outcome illustrates a recurring lesson in both politics and business. Attempts to influence or pressure others can unintentionally strengthen the very position one seeks to weaken. By pushing too visibly, the reaction becomes emotional as well as political.

In this case, the pressure created unity. What may have been intended to divide instead reinforced support, leading directly to the strong election result we see today. It is, quite literally, an example of stirring the bush and finding a snake.
