Government Does Not Have Its Own Money
There are times when government begins to believe it knows better than the people it serves. To be fair, governments often have access to more data, more advisors, and more resources than ordinary citizens. Policies are usually created with the intention of improving society or protecting the public interest. On paper, that sounds reasonable.
But there is one fundamental fact that is often forgotten.
Government does not have its own money.
Every program, every subsidy, every new initiative is funded by money taken from the public through taxes, fees, or debt that future taxpayers must repay. That reality creates an unavoidable conflict. Some people benefit directly from government action, while others carry the cost without receiving much in return. When this balance is ignored, trust begins to erode.
The problem is not that government acts. Society needs rules, infrastructure, and basic public services. The problem begins when government assumes that more action automatically means better outcomes. Resources are not unlimited, and decisions made far from the people affected often miss practical realities on the ground.
There is also a political argument that sounds appealing: “just take more money from the rich.” At first, this seems simple and fair. But the number of people who can continuously absorb higher taxation is limited. If taxation becomes excessive, wealth moves, investment slows, or people simply leave. When that happens, governments do not reduce spending — they expand the tax base downward. The burden gradually shifts from the very rich to the less rich, and eventually to ordinary working people. This cycle continues until there is little left to take, while those working within government structures often remain relatively protected from the consequences.
In business, we learn quickly that spending money without accountability leads to failure. Governments are not immune to this principle. In fact, because they spend other people’s money, the responsibility to understand limits should be even greater.
A healthy government understands what it should do — and just as importantly, what it should not do. Knowing the limit is not weakness. It is discipline.
Government must always remember: it manages public money. It does not create it.
