The Restaurant That Even Japanese Think Is Too Cheap — Saizeriya
Before flying back to Seattle yesterday, I stopped for lunch at Saizeriya, a very popular Italian-style restaurant chain in Japan. Many visitors don’t realize this, but Saizeriya is known among Japanese people themselves as being almost too cheap for what you get.
For lunch, I ordered a mozzarella cheese and tomato, shrimp salad, pasta, and the drink bar, which includes unlimited soft drinks and coffee. During this season, they were also serving a cup of soup for free. The total came to ¥1280 — just a little over US$8.00.
In today’s world, especially coming from the United States, that price is hard to believe. You simply cannot beat that combination of volume and quality at that price point. It immediately reminded me of the $4.99 roast chicken at Costco — a product that almost defines value in America. Saizeriya plays a similar role in Japan.
What makes this interesting is not just the low price. The food is consistent, clean, and served quickly. Nobody treats it as luxury dining, but it is reliable. Students, families, and business people all use it without hesitation. It is casual, practical, and honest.
Japan still has places where everyday meals remain affordable without becoming cheap in experience. Saizeriya is one of them. And honestly, even many Japanese people wonder how they make money at these prices.
Sometimes the most impressive business model is not about being expensive — it’s about delivering dependable value every single day.
