This morning I had a meeting about two miles away.

 

In the U.S., there’s no question what I would do. I’d get in my car, drive to the location, have the meeting, then get back in my car and return to the office. Walking usually isn’t even considered.

 

In Japan, it’s different. I checked the route and saw two options: 25 minutes by train or about 30 minutes on foot. I chose to walk. I wanted to look around, do a bit of sightseeing, and just experience the city.

 

It ended up taking me a little under 50 minutes. About two miles, roughly 4,000 steps. The temperature was around 36°F—cold, but actually quite refreshing. Along the way, I took a few photos and shared them here. One of them looks like it was taken on a ship, but I was actually standing on a bridge. It’s the kind of view most tourists never see.

 

I also caught a glimpse of Tokyo Skytree, the tallest broadcasting tower in the world. You don’t have to go looking for landmarks in Tokyo—they just appear as part of your everyday walk.

 

On the way back, I took a bus to Tokyo Station and then walked again to my hotel.

 

Experiences like this remind me why people in Japan tend to be so fit. Walking isn’t exercise here—it’s just part of daily life.
