Silence That Speaks
Yesterday, I arrived at Tokyo Station after a 2.5-hour Shinkansen ride from Shin-Osaka.
During the entire journey, I did not hear a single loud voice. Not one.

 

People checked their phones quietly.
When someone needed to make a call, they didn’t speak in their seat—they quietly walked to the space between cars and talked there. No announcements were needed. No rules were enforced. Everyone simply understood what was expected.

 

It was not silence created by fear or restrictions.
It was silence created by respect.

 

A few days earlier, I had a very different experience at Seattle-Tacoma Airport. Near the boarding gate for my flight to Japan, a man was speaking loudly on his phone. His voice dominated the entire waiting area. He seemed completely unaware—or unconcerned—that dozens of people around him were forced to listen to his conversation.

 

The contrast was striking.

 

In Japan, people adjust their behavior to avoid disturbing others.
In the U.S., many people expect others to adjust to them.

 

Neither culture is perfect. But moments like this make you realize how deeply values shape everyday behavior. Sometimes, the biggest cultural differences are not found in grand speeches or policies—but in quiet trains and loud airport lounges.
